Australian Multilingual Broadcaster SBS Suspend 15 Language Services to Save Money
Multilingual broadcaster SBS has been forced to suspend services in 15 languages. SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid told a Senate committee that the decline in advertising revenue has had an impact on the station’s budget. As a result, Mr Ebeid has said that several radio services have been affected.
“We had to put about 15 of our language groups into recess to try and save a little bit of money … it was the first time in SBS’s history that we’ve had to do that,” Ebeid told the Australian Daily Telegraph.
15 of the total 60 SBS Radio language programs were temporarily suspended over the summer. A spokeswoman for SBS said that the selection of the 15 programs followed a consideration of population, demographics, English proficiencies, and staffing matters.
The languages that were affected include Bulgarian, Danish, Estonian, Fijian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Norwegian, Romanian, Slovak, and Yiddish.
