English Language Students flock to Success Charter School in New York

Officials at a charter network that wants to open a new elementary school in Southside Williamsburg claim that they have attracted much interest from English language students. Staff from the Eva Moskowitz-led Success Charter Network reveal that they have already received 174 applications from potential pupils in District 14 for the new school’s k-1 classes. Of those applicants, approximately 30% state that English is not their native language.

The statistics were provided in an attempt to counter claims that Success had only reached out to affluent white families in Northside Williamsburg. “These numbers speak to the fact that families from many different backgrounds view Success Academy as a viable option for their children,” spokeswoman Jenny Sedlis told the New York Daily News.

In spite of this, several community leaders are opposed to the charter. “We have yet to see the success rate of Success ELL students because they have not graduated anyone” said Councilwoman Diana Reyna (D-Williamsburg).

Reyna argues that the network’s projected ELL numbers for the new charter school are “skewed for less” than what the whole school district serves.
