Google adds more languages to Translation App

Google has added five more languages to its translation app for Apples iPhone, increasing the number of supported languages to 63. Product manager Jeff Chin states that the update now supports Bengali, Guajarati, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu.

Chin wrote in a blog post that “The updated app supports the ability to view dictionary results for single words and to display romanizations for these new Indic languages. So even if you can’t read the script the words are written in, you can still take a shot at reading the translation.”

However, Chin added that this language software was still in the experimental alpha stage. This means that each translation may include words for some of the apps more mature languages like Spanish and Chinese. Chin said that this was because these more common languages have more parallel data to power Googles statistical machine translation.

“Despite these challenges, we believe users will find these new languages helpful and we’re excited to be making them available through the Translate app,” he said.
