Indian Government Invites Developers to have a Say in Local Language Computing

India has seen a remarkable growth in the number of Internet users over the past decade, but it is questionable how useful the opportunities that the Internet provides Indians. Unless computing accessible in local languages, Internet growth may become stifled as a result.

The stunted growth will not only hamper the deliverance to the society at large, but it will also deny opportunities to many individuals who require local languages for communications. It is important to encourage local languages in computing, as it will provide economic empowerment and educational opportunities to the masses.

With the International Mother Language Day being celebrate on Tuesday, software developers are making an effort to promote local languages online. Arguably the biggest hurdle in this effort is the absence of a standardised keyboard.

But the positive news is that the Indian Governments Department of IT has invited developers to provide their input. “It may be a reality soon and the spread of local language computing will get a big boost,” Meghashyam Karanam, Product Marketing Manager, Project, Visio & Localization, Microsoft India, told the Hindu.
