Mexican Translation mix-up blamed for false accusation
A woman’s family is infuriated after Mexican officials appeared to suggest that the beating she had received was a result of domestic violence.
Paul Giles, Sheila Nabb’s brother, has said that the translated version he received says “unfortunate events are the result of domestic violence and not the result of an unsafe condition.”
Giles said Nabb’s husband, Andrew, was questioned by authorities and released.
“Anyone who has ever met Andrew will immediately disregard any and all accusations against him,” Giles said in a statement.
However the translation may have been confused. Giles noted that “domestic violence” could alternatively mean “internal violence,” used to indicate that the attack happened inside Mexico.
In that statement, the Sinaloa State Government said “this was an unfortunate and isolated event.”
