Mistranslation makes Federer sound Critical of Teammate

Roger Federer may have been knocked out of the Davis Cup by the United States, but the Swiss was forced to play down a mistranslation from French that made him sound critical of his teammate Stanislas Wawrinka.

Federer’s analysis of his doubles defeat alongside his partner Wawrinka was “I played a good doubles, and Stan not a bad one.” However, once the remark was translated into English, the “not a bad one” incorrectly became “a bad one.” Federer now says that the situation is fine.

“The Stan comment was taken completely the wrong way. I’d never say that, and I’ll move on quickly. I spoke with both (captain) Severin (Luthi) and Stan to make sure there is no misunderstanding,” Federer said in a press conference.

After the initial uproar, Federer arrived on Monday with his family for the ABN Amro World Tennis tournament. The top seed will begin his campaign on Wednesday against Nicolas Mahut as he plays the tournament for the seventh time.
