Students Career Advice: Translation Technology & Website Localisation
Despite the growing sophistication of automated translation programs, the need for translators is greater than it has ever been. With there being a projected growth for employment in the language service industry in the next ten years, it is an exciting time to be pursuing a career as a translator or interpreter.
Yet, the increasing use of innovative technologies is sure to change the role of translators. Geoffrey Bowden, general secretary of the Association of American Translation Companies (ATC), is not worried that machine translation will put jobs at risk, but claims that “It may be the translator becomes more of an editor.”
Although there have been advance in technologies, language is still a very subjective. This makes it is very difficult to rely on solely computers to accurately translate texts. Consequently, the human touch is an absolute necessity, as machine translations require checking, editing and in some cases re-translating.
One example of technology that can be frequently and accurately used is Translation Memory:
- Translation Memory is essentially a glossary of terms that are compiled over time. The software identifies words and phrases that have already been translated, and automatically performs these changes should they arise in future documents.

The Internet and Localisation
Interestingly, technology is currently presenting some of the largest opportunities for Translators.
With the availability of Internet access across the world rising, businesses are attempting to create localised versions of their websites to appeal to these emerging markets. For instance, there was a 1,825.3% growth of Internet usage in the Middle East between 2000 and 2010.

Similarly, firms are trying to publicise themselves by attempting to maximise the number of hits they receive in local search engines. By constantly creating new content, companies are attempting to get high rankings in Google, Yahoo, Baidu, Yandex, or any other regional search engine by performing Multilingual Search Engine Optimisation (MSEO).
Therefore, with online content rapidly proliferating, the Internet has created huge requirements for translation on a larger scale.
Therefore, the lucrative video game industry is going to require language services to keep on localising new releases.
